What can there be inside a beaded bag from the roaring 20s? In my work as curator at my Lerario Lapadula archive, I always find myself in contact with clothes and accessories that tell or hide stories. I am always fascinated by imagining who, when, why has worn these objects. So I happen to be able to find hidden traces that describe uses, customs, fashions beyond fashion.

So what is hidden inside a 20s beaded bag?

I want to share it with you. We are in Paris in 1924, and this is a purse entirely beaded in Czech glass and rhinestone. The style is that of Erté, a typical example of Art Déco. Inside this 20s bag, on the ivory silk, I found traces of red lipstick. The girl who owned it was trendy, and inside her roaring 20s beaded bag carried the necessary to make up her lips. After all, her lips, in the roaring 20s, played a formidable role in appearance.

In the bright red color found inside this 20s beaded bag, or in the burgundy color, the women lips were designed in the shape of a heart. Lip make-up was so fashionable that in 1925 a film “My Lady’s Lips” paid tribute to them. Clara Bow made cinemas fill and the fashion of lip makeup became unstoppable. Inside a 20s beaded bag: cosa può esserci?

Nel mio lavoro di curator presso il mio archivio Lerario Lapadula, mi ritrovo sempre a contatto con abiti e accessori che raccontano o nascondono storie. Dunque sono sempre affascinato dall’immaginare chi, quando, perché abbia indossato questi oggetti. Così mi capita di poter trovare delle tracce nascoste che descrivono usi, costumi, mode oltre le mode.

Cosa si nasconde dunque in una borsetta anni ’20?

Lo voglio condividere con voi. Siamo a Parigi nel 1924, e questa è una borsetta da sera interamente ricamata con coralli in vetro Ceco e strass. Lo stile è quello di Erté, un tipico esempio di Art Déco. Una volta aperta, sulla seta avorio, ho trovato tracce di rossetto. La ragazza che la possedeva era alla moda, e dentro la sua “20s beaded bag” portava il necessario per truccare le sue labbra. Del resto le labbra, nei ruggenti anni 20, giocarono un ruolo formidabile nell’aspetto.

Nel colore rosso acceso come quello ritrovato in questa borsa, o nel colore vinaccia, le labbra erano disegnate a forma di cuore. Questo tipo di Make-Up fu così alla moda che nel 1925 un film “My Lady’s Lips” fece loro tributo. Clara Bow fece riempire i cinematografi di pubblico, e la moda del trucco per le labbra divenne inarrestabile.
